The fish market at the Wharf is the last remnant of a rapidly changing neighborhood undergoing a $3 billion redevelopment. Around 20 restaurants and shops are opening, with more grand openings and celebrations planned for other businesses well into next year. Opened in 1805, Maine Avenue Fish Market is the oldest continuously operating open-air fish market in the U.S.
It is well known that Washington’s cultural life before the 50s was almost inexistent. President John F. Kennedy was interested in bringing culture to the nation’s capital, and provided leadership and support for many projects, including this fabulous structure that would later have his name. The Kennedy Center sits majestically next to the Potomac, and hosts over 2,000 every year. In the image, two young visitors play outside, while the night brings lights from across the river.
The National Museum of the American Indian is an architectonic gem in the Mall. Its curvilinear interiors and use of the natural light evoke a profound spiritual experience that is well complemented with the surrounding gardens and fountains. This Smithsonian museum pays tribute to the Native cultures not only in the U.S., but in all the Western Hemisphere. And the Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe is a perfect excuse to visit the museum regularly.
At Lincoln Park, east of the Capitol, a runner profits from the last warm days to show off while a nice old lady appreciates the view.
Fall in DC is more like a nice summer. Plenty of festivals and a benign sun without the aggressive humidity. And if you don’t believe me, head to the Arlington Memorial Bridge that links the Mall and the famed cemetery. On the eastern end of the bridge stand two pairs of monumental neoclassical equestrian sculptures, elegantly guarding the pass.
Last weekend marked the beginning of the National Hispanic Heritage Month, an observation that started in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson. In the District, we have a robust community of Salvadorans that came escaping from the civil wars in the 80-90s. You will rarely see them, but these Washingtonians wake up the earliest and work the hardest. In this postcard, a mother walks her daughter to school in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood, or as the locals call it, La Monplesa.
The city of monuments wakes at dawn, and on New York Avenue, the old bus terminal stands elegantly with its art deco ebullience. For over a century, the landmark was the gateway to the city. During war times, the line to catch a bus would wrap around three sides of the block.

Last holiday weekend marked the (unofficial) end of the Summer season. It’s time to bid adieu to the hot ‘n’ hazy days and say hello to fall’s cool nights, cozy sweaters, and pumpkin-spice-everything. The tall sunflowers growing in front of row houses are good way to spot this transition in the District.

Yesterday we celebrated the Act for establishing the permanent seat of the Government of the United States along the Potomac river. In the image, few years later, Pierre L’Enfant imagines the city from modern Arlington, with Georgetown in across the water.
It’s another day in our capital, a bit after the morning light has commenced to reveal the shapes of the city, but before the streets are invaded with commuters. Emerging in the new light are Dupont Circle’s secrets, elegant residences and wide avenues in shades of green. Countless buses full of tourists (and the desperate commuters behind them) pass by Independence Avenue SW each day. Built in 1930, the roadway along the mall was planned to be wide and modern. Bars everywhere hang their rainbow flags to welcome patrons celebrating Pride in our capital. Over a full weekend, the LGBTQ community and allies inundate the streets with colorful costumes and loud tunes. The closet is only for clothes…and no cranky people allowed!
